New Grechetto vines trained in Guyot style
Well, today we began work on training the third year old Grecheto vines. This is the first year for training and tieing in a controlled fashion.
Maria Barbara Conti, our onologa, has decided for the ‘Guyot’ (see Jules Guyot, French viticulturist, 1800’s) form of pruning and tieing of these vines. Grechetto is a highly productive species and works well with this type of constraint.
When pruning in this style, first one must look for the main ‘artery’, the single cane that has the best flow from the trunk through to the arm. This will remain. Then the next part is to find the arm that has the requirements for the spur. Look at the juncture and see if there is one bud facing downward, then look for the next bud up, facing upward, then cut approximately 1 – 1,5 cm higher than this, so that the cold does not get to the buds.
Lets see what happens during the summer!!!
This is terrific. I will continue to follow your information. Love it
